CLEAN DOWNTOWN PROGRAM READY
TO “ASSIST” WITH RED WINGS VICTORY
Fans Can Help Keep Downtown Detroit Clean for June 6 Celebration
DETROIT, MI – June 5, 2008 -- The Downtown Detroit Partnership Clean Downtown team is gearing up to make a major “assist” for the Detroit Red Wings victory parade on Friday, June 6. Instead of Zambonis®, a fleet of the distinctive Clean Downtown trucks and 35 crew members will fan out to keep downtown Detroit clean during the festivities. Also watch for a Clean Downtown truck in the parade line-up on Friday.
“As soon as we knew the victory was in sight, we took a time-out to work with the city (DPW) and state (MDOT) to plan our game strategy for the Detroit Red Wings victory parade,” said Downtown Detroit Partnership President & CEO Ann Lang. “Our crews are ready, additional trash receptacles are in place, and we’re asking fans to help to make our Wings Clean Sweep job a little easier. They can lend a hand by placing trash in receptacles, being careful of trees and flowers, and not placing stickers anywhere in the public environment.”
The Clean Downtown program, which was launched in June of 2006, employs Goodwill Industries workers to keep litter off the streets; remove graffiti/posters/stickers; steam-clean bus shelters and sidewalks; and handle weed abatement. The program covers streets and sidewalks in downtown Detroit, the new Detroit RiverWalk, portions of Midtown, and also handles cleanup for many of downtown’s largest events and festivals. DDP is also responsible for landscape maintenance in downtown public spaces to achieve its goal of keeping downtown Detroit “clean and green.”
